Bioengineering (or biomedical engineering) is a career that focuses on the development, design, and evaluation of effectiveness of such things as artificial organs, measuring and imaging equipment, health management and care delivery systems, and similar things. It combines engineering principles with knowledge of biological and medical sciences. The design of prosthetics falls under its own specialty of prosthetics engineering, generally not being included in the tasks of generalist biomedical engineers.
Oftentimes, a career in biomedical engineering involves designing or aiding in the design of some medical equipment, and making sure they operate correctly and safely, acting as the middleman between the manufacturer and the user. In most jobs, the latter is done far more often: the largest part of the job being maintenance of the present equipment in medical labs. In research-based professions, long stretches of time may be spent on the cycle of researching, developing, and testing one thing. Careers may be found in a lab, a hospital, or in manufacturing.
